Coffee care
Coffee machine cleaning vs descaling: which do you need?
Coffee oils and limescale are different problems. Find out what each maintenance cycle does and how to choose the right treatment.

The short answer: they do different jobs
Cleaning removes coffee oils, grounds and other residues from the parts that contact coffee. Milk systems have their own cleaning needs. Descaling removes mineral scale from the machine’s water-heating and water-flow paths. A descaling cycle is not a substitute for cleaning a brew group or milk system.
Many machines have separate cleaning and descaling alerts because the treatments address different deposits. Check your model’s manual before buying tablets or starting a cycle: a cleaning tablet and a descaling tablet should not be treated as interchangeable.
Match the task to the machine part
A useful first step is identifying exactly what needs attention. The maintenance menu and manual should tell you which cycle and product to use.
- Coffee grounds and oily residue: follow the brew-group, filter-basket or portafilter cleaning instructions.
- Milk residue: use the manufacturer’s milk-system routine and permitted cleaner.
- A descale alert: follow the model’s descaling procedure and specified descaler.
- Drip tray or water tank: empty, rinse and clean as directed in the manual.
- A leak, electrical fault or persistent flow problem: stop and seek service advice rather than repeatedly adding cleaner.
How often should you descale in the UK?
There is no single interval that suits every UK household. Water hardness, the number of drinks made, the machine design and any filter system affect maintenance. Follow the machine’s alert and the manufacturer’s guidance rather than applying a universal monthly schedule.
Where your machine asks you to set water hardness, use the method supplied with the machine or consult your water supplier’s local information. Correct settings help the machine give relevant maintenance reminders. A filter does not mean you can ignore the manual’s descaling advice.
Can you use vinegar or any descaling tablet?
Only use solutions and products permitted by your machine’s instructions. Do not assume vinegar, a kettle cleaner or a generic household product is appropriate for an espresso or pod machine. Product concentration, materials and cycle requirements can differ.
Read both sets of directions before starting: the machine manual sets out the cycle, and the compatible cleaner label sets out its dilution. Follow the switching-off, cooling, ventilation and rinsing steps specified. Do not replace a dedicated cycle with improvised brewing steps.
MilesKay offers coffee cleaning and descaling products as separate options. Choose the treatment for the actual maintenance task, then confirm its suitability for your model. If you are unsure, ask your machine manufacturer before use.
